The Seattle Sonics are in the midst of a terrible season, with a losing record in a terrible division. As a life-long Sonics fan, I am embarrassed. Not only for the way they have been playing, but for the way they have been run.
They let "Mr. Sonic" Nate McMillan go to coach Paul Allen's Portland Trailblazers because they didn't want to pay him and then they turned around and paid waaaay too much money to Ray Allen, who can be a great scorer, but has been largely inconsistent and has never played defense. I said it last year during their playoff run and I'll say it again - they should have traded him when they had the chance.
Now that they are tired of losing some of Mr. Starbucks millions, they are demanding a new stadium to play in which will allow them to charge more money for tickets, pay already overpaid players more and presumably help them at least "break even". I'm all for the Sonics (and the Storm) staying in the area, but don't like the way they are trying to force the City of Seattle, King County and the State to help pay for their new arena. As Mr. Schultz says, they are a business - and they should be self-sustaining.
I'd love to see the Sonics build a new arena and play here on the Eastside - but only if they find a way to build it theirselves or with other private money. Taxes, no matter where they come from, should not be raised to save this team.
My personal opinion is that the entire business plan is flawed - they are expecting government subsidies and taxes to support their business - and to continue to pay even more money to athletes who are already paid way too much.
I might also note that despite the fact that this publication has supported the Sonics, the Storm and Starbucks in the past year, they won't even give us the time of day - let alone support Eastside Business. I only hope that if they are able to figure out a way to stay in Seattle or move to the Eastside that they look at the way they're being run - and that they decide that it's a good idea to help support those who support them.
