Missed Free Throws Key in Close Loss to Heat
I didn't see the first half (plus) of the game tonight, but the Sonics were up by 6 or so with three minutes left and still managed to lose it. The end of the game was tight with the Sonics up until 19 seconds left in the game. In the last two minutes Ray Allen choked the second of two shots at the line - crucial since they were only down 1 with the ball and 19 seconds left. It doesn't matter if he makes 20 in a row to open the season - he choked when it was crucial.
Ray's shooting continues to make or break the Bellevue Sonics and I think it is time for a change.

Together To Ignore Each Other
I had to take a second to snap this photo of two people walking on Main Street in Bellevue yesterday. I don't know them, if they are married or if they were even together, but it did seem ironic that they both thought that it was more important to be talking to some else rather than each other.It makes me wonder if they were having their conversations since they left home - or if they might have actually spoken to each other on the way to the coffee shop ...

Co-founder of the Jolly Rancher Candy Company Dies at 91
It is a sad day for anyone who grew up with Jolly Ranchers:
Dorothy Harmsen, who was a co-founder of the Jolly Rancher Candy Company, the maker of tangy, slowly dissolving bricks of fruit-flavored candy, and the owner of one of the nation’s largest private collections of art of the American West, died in Denver on Aug. 29. She was 91.
The cause was a heart attack, said her son, William D. Harmsen Jr.
Over a career in confections that spanned 50 years, Mrs. Harmsen and her late husband, William, created scores of original candies on their farm in Colorado, including chocolates, fruit chews, jelly beans and lollipops. More at New York Times

The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin Dies at 44
The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin recently died doing what he loved. It's a pity that he had to go, but he did entertain us all - and he knew the risks of his work. Of all the dangerous situations he put himself in, it seemed very unlucky for him to be killed by a stingray.

Thanks Once Again Craig Newmark
Thank you once again Craig Newmark of the world-famous and highly used Craigslist.com.
Tonight we bought a Subaru Legacy Wagon for my wife from a fellow Craigslister. Great car, fair price - nice people. Sorry to those waiting who didn't get to buy it, but we're glad to have it - and there is now a 1993 Subaru Legacy AWD Wagon with 200,000 miles for sale at: http://seattle.craigslist.org/est/car/195190685.html
In the past I have used Craigslist to rent property, find auto repair, hire people, buy and sell vehicles, buy furniture and more! In the past two weeks, besides buying a car, I have purchased a swingset and computer desk for my 2 year old daughter.
Craigslist has helped millions of people connect and advertise for free - which has put a damper on a lot of print advertisers that were overcharging. Even though we have not had a huge number of classified ads in Eastside Business, we do have a strong and loyal readership, which leads to a strong display advertising base. I don't have a bad word to say about Craigslist (all praise), but do feel bad that some of the other media outlets have begun to try to tear it down - just remember to consider the source and what they have lost due to consumers winning!

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's JK in a Tomahawk
It's been awhile since I've posted, but I've been real busy since I accepted the position of Director of Operations for HomeTeam.com, Inc. (HomeTeam.com) . We've been working on finishing off our move from Bellevue to new digs in the Pioneer Square area of downtown Seattle - and we're growing and poised to take off like wild-fire. We will be revealing a lot more about the future of our business next week at the Inman Real Estate Connect Conference in San Francisco - and it's a lot more than a great, nationally syndicated, reality (cause tv) show where we help a deserving family buy their first home.
Of course, I've also been spending time guiding the great team we've built to publish Eastside Business newspaper. EB is really growing in popularity and reach, despite the usual slow down in the summer months. It's kind of strange that since I started EB in March of 2005, there have been two other "competitors" start up in business news on the Eastside, but despite having multiple businesses on the Eastside, I never see them anywhere - and don't receive them in the mail..... Hmm.... maybe Eastside Business does have the best business to business exposure on the entire Eastside. At least our subscription and advertising rates are affordable for everyone - and people read and love our rag.
Although it has been very tough to squeeze in, I have decided to finally follow through on getting my private pilot's license. It's been a long time goal, that has been stalled a number of times for various reasons, but I'm finally committed to getting it done. I've got a great instructor and aircraft to train in through Acuwings down at Renton Airport. During my first flight on Wednesday morning with my very patient teacher Charlie Culver, he showed me how to take off, land and do a touch and go - and then he had me do a couple touch and gos (take off and landings) myself. It was a little unsettling, not being totally sure of what I was supposed to do, but I was definitely having fun and ready for more. I'm really looking forward to my lesson in the morning and hope that my landings keep getting a little smoother each time ...

For anyone who has always wanted to learn to fly, I fully recommend Acuwings and Charlie - they make it easy to learn and get licensed - and are the most affordable flight school around. For experienced pilots, they have many different aircraft available for renting - and the best rates around.
